There are three RF switches (Sector Microwave SAF1) that control which klystrons are used for which accelerating structures of FELIX (and FELICE). An RF switch is in position 1 if ports 1-2 and 3-4 are connected. The switch is in position 2 if 1-4 and 2-3 are connected.
- RF switch 1 controls if the buncher is powered by Klystron East or Klystron West.
- RF switch 2 and 3 together control if the LINACs are powered by the same klystron as the buncher or the other klystron.
Or, in other words:
- RF switch 2 and 3 together control if one or two klystrons are being used.
- RF switch 1 controls which of the klystrons powers the buncher.
| switch position (sw1 - sw2 - sw3) | buncher powered by | LINACs powered by |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - 2 - 1 | West | East |
| 1 - 1 - 2 | West | West |
| 2 - 1 - 2 | East | East |
| 2 - 2 - 1 | East | West |
The RF switches are set in position by the relays of ETH484-03. The table below shows the switching actions that can be performed. The relays should be pulsed for 1s. Do not leave them powered indefinitely.
| Pulse on relay | Resulting action |
|---|---|
| 1 | switch 1 to position 1 |
| 2 | switch 1 to position 2 |
| 3 | switch 2 to position 2, switch 3 to position 1 |
| 4 | switch 2 to position 1, switch 3 to position 2 |
Please note that a switch that is stuck may act as an electrical 'short' when it's controlling relay is activated, and may then draw enough current away from other switches to prevent those from operating.
The position of the switches is reported via the digital inputs of ETH484-03.
| Digital input no. | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1 | Switch 1 is in position 1 |
| 2 | Switch 1 is in position 2 |
| 3 | Switch 2 is in position 1 |
| 4 | Switch 2 is in position 2 |
| 5 | Switch 3 is in position 1 |
| 6 | Switch 3 is in position 2 |
