IT onboarding (version 2025-01-29)

[edit | edit source]

Computers

[edit | edit source]

Shared computers (students)

[edit | edit source]
  • These are connected to the on the B-FAC.RU.NL
  • Log in with your science account.
  • It is possible to get a local administrator account. Call the CNCZ helpdesk and mention your computer name, which should be on a sticker. To log in, prepend your account name with dot and backslash to tell the computer it is a local account, for instance “.\admin-myname”.

Own computers (staff)

[edit | edit source]
  • You are encouraged to either have these join the B-FAC.RU.NL domain (ask CNCZ) or else create a local user with exactly the same name and password as your science account. This will make your life easier when connecting to network shares.

Software

  • CNCZ maintains a collection of software at this server \\install\install
  • HFML-FELIX also has a collection of software at \\hfmlfelixdisk\hfmlfelixdisk\share\software

Lab computers

[edit | edit source]
  • Lab computers need to be preregistered with HFML-FELIX IT department if they want to connect to the yellow FELIX user network.

Networks

[edit | edit source]

Please note that not all wall outlets are in use, because there are much more outlets than available switch ports. If you have a need for more outlets, ask the HFML-FELIX helpdesk and mention the outlet number and which network you would like to connect to. The networks are color coded. The network outlets at FELIX are often also color coded. Please use a network cable of the corresponding color to connect your device. This makes sure your packets stay on the right network.

Office network

[edit | edit source]
  • Gray,
  • Internet access
  • IP address range:
    • 131.174.14.0/24 (FELIX side)
    • 131.174.36.0/24 (HFML side)

FELIX user network

[edit | edit source]
  • Yellow
  • There is a MAC address filter meaning your device has to be pre-registered with the HFML-FELIX IT department.
  • No internet access (exceptions are possible with the right arguments) so devices on this network enjoy more protection from the outside world.
  • IP address range:
    • 192.168.114.0/24 (fxunet.science.ru.nl)

FELIX machine network

[edit | edit source]
  • Green
  • For FEL devices only.
  • There is a MAC address filter meaning your device has to be pre-registered with the HFML-FELIX IT department.
  • IP address range:
    • 192.168.14.0/24 (fxmnet.science.ru.nl)

Point to point connections

[edit | edit source]
  • Please use another color for connections between a pc and a measuring device, like black, blue or red. Especially not yellow or green.

Storage

[edit | edit source]

hfmlfelixdisk

[edit | edit source]
  • hfmlfelixdisk is a server with 100 TB of disk space
  • Access is via samba share at \\hfmlfelixdisk\hfmlfelixdisk
  • If you are not logged in with a science account, you will need to open Windows Credentials and create a windows credential for host hfmlfelixdisk with your science account name and password before you will be able to connect.
  • Please put raw measurement data in /data, and any other files in /groups/yourgroup/ (ask your group leader about specific group policies).
  • For share lab computers, don’t connect to hfmlfelixdisk with your personal science account, but rather use the groups functional science account, or you risk leaving your files open to others who use that shared lab computer.
  • Snapshots are made every 4 hours. These are kept for at least 48 hours. Dailies are kept for at least one month. To go further back, you may need to contact CNCZ. You can right click any folder on hfmlfelixdisk, select "Previous Versions" and access files from that snapshot.
  • Access to folders is based on group permissions.
  • Advice: use an adblocker and other extensions designed to prevent malware and to protect your privacy on the web.
  • For Firefox and Chrome, a good combination is using uBlock Origin, Ghostery and Privacy Badger.
    • Update 2025: For Chrome, use uBlock Lite instead of Origin, which will not continue to work in the near future.
