FELICE chopper wheel

The FELICE chopper wheel is a device designed to protect the FELIX linacs from gasses in the FELICE user experiments. Specifically, the device prevents noble gasses from propagating from the FELICE user stations into the FELIX linacs, since the getter pumps cannot capture these gasses.

It consist of a rotating disc with a hole that is synchronized to the FELICE electron beam, allowing the electron bunch to pass while the hole is in the beam line, and rejecting any gas molecules at times when the hole isn't in the beam line.

The device is not currently in use.

Getter - a deposit of reactive material that is placed inside a vacuum system, for the purpose of completing and maintaining the vacuum. When gas molecules strike the getter material, they combine with it chemically or by absorption. Thus the getter removes small amounts of gas from the evacuated space.
